Why It's Important to Celebrate Juneteenth!

Miles Harry, Freelance Writer

General Order No. 3 extolled the absolute equality of personal rights and property rights between former masters and slaves

For over two years, under Confederate control, slaves had heard rumors of freedom but could only hope and pray that those rumors were true.  On the day of, “June 19, 1865” former slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebrations when the news finally arrived that they were free!

We celebrate this historic moment because the slaves held on to their hopes and prayers. Against all odds those hopes and prayers were girded with an unending faith.  We celebrate that “never give up, never give out, never say die” faith that the slaves  exhibited.  It is this legacy of faith that should always be remembered -  A faith that is our beacon of hope!

Historical Context: June 19, 1865 was the day Union General Gordon Granger, along with 2,000 federal soldiers, arrived on Galveston Island in Texas.  While standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3”   This order was a direct result of the Emancipation Proclamation that had been issued on September 22, 1882, with an effective date of January 1, 1863.
